FAQ's
What should I pack? Can I arrive late to ALA Hoosier Girls State? No, you must arrive between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm on Sunday for registration. Activities begin promptly after registration and missing activities will negatively impact what a delegate gains from the program. If you find you cannot arrive on time, please contact your district board member so they may notify an alternate. Can I leave ALA Hoosier Girls State early? ALA Hoosier Girls State's policy is that all delegates must stay for the entire program, from registration on Sunday to Honor Day on Saturday. If a delegate leaves early, she forfeits all rights to any honors, awards, and scholarships presented and announced at Honor Day. Delegates are not permitted to say that they attended the program. Unlike camp, ALA Hoosier Girls State is a week-long process of learning about leadership, government, campaigning, running for office, and then operating in the elected or appointed position. It would not be fair to other citizens who are counting on her to perform those responsibilities and who do stay the entire time. We recognize this is a difficult decision for young adults. If you cannot stay the entire week, don't hesitate to contact your district board member so they may notify an alternate. |
How Are ALA Hoosier Girls State Delegates Chosen? Candidates for ALA Hoosier Girls State are chosen by their school and/or local American Legion Auxiliary Unit. I am a ALA Hoosier Girls State Alternate, Do I need to take the online orientation? Actually, alternates are only required to take the online orientation if they become a delegate. However, it is recommended that alternates complete the online orientation to be ready to replace a delegate if necessary. Can I bring my cell phone/laptop/tablet to ALA Hoosier Girls State? You are welcome to bring your cell phone to ALA HGS but remember, the use of cell phones during meetings and assemblies is prohibited. We understand you may be taking online classes to further your education, though we would rather you use the computer lab on campus provided to us. You may bring your laptop/tablet to do homework. Laptops/tablets should stay in residence halls at all times, and only used during recharge time or time you are NOT in meetings. ALA HGS is the priority for the week. |
Are snacks available between meals? Trine University has a bookstore open during the day, and delegates may visit during meals or other free time. Vending machines are also available in the glass building and some residence halls. Residence halls have a microwave you may use if you want to bring snacks. There are NOT refrigerators for use by delegates. Any food-related allergies or dietary needs should be put on the health form you fill out before arriving at ALA HGS.
